How does my pet develop arthritis?

The most common type of arthritis in pets is osteoarthritis. It is often referred to as the “wear and tear” disease because that’s how it usually develops. The bones in your pet’s body are separated by cartilage which breaks down over time and causes the bones to rub together. This results in inflammation and pain at the joints. Without treatment, the disease only gets worse.

What are the signs of arthritis in pets?

Pets show signs of the disease in different ways. It’s not uncommon for pets to try to hide their pain, so it’s important that you pick up on any changes in their behaviour. Here are some signs you should look for:

• Wincing or groaning when being active
• Difficulty going up and down the stairs
• Reluctance to play 
• Limping or trembling when moving

How do you treat arthritis in pets?

In order to treat your pet’s condition, our veterinarians will run diagnostics to provide the appropriate treatment for them. We offer medications in the form of nutritional supplements and anti-inflammatory drugs. We may also recommend surgery and massage therapy to alleviate the pain.
